how to Watch Ghostbusters Afterlife

Because of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions across the globe, we got used to films releasing both in cinemas and on streaming platforms around the same time – unfortunately, that isn’t the case for Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Right now Ghostbusters: Afterlife is only available to watch in-person at a movie theatre and there currently isn’t a timeline for when the film will no longer be exclusive to cinemas. That means you’ll likely have to wait a good few months into 2022 before you can easily stream, rent or buy the movie – with options emerging from February at the earliest.

Unlike most studios, Sony doesn’t have a dedicated platform like HBO Max or Paramount Plus – so it’s a little harder to guess where the film will be released. We’ve seen Sony team up with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus for its streaming releases.

Based on the availability of previous Ghostbusters films, though, a release on Starz or Spectrum in the US would be our guess, and Netflix in the UK. Wherever it comes out we also expect it will available to rent or buy digitally too – giving you plenty of options if you want to watch.

The “Ghostbusters” franchise is one that could use a fresh coat of paint, and director Jason Reitman (original director Ivan’s son) infuses some youth in the new sequel, which focuses on an OG Ghostbusters granddaughter (Mckenna Grace) taking on spooks and dark forces in small-town Oklahoma. Yet still, perhaps more than ever, this thing is stuck in the past, bringing back old stars (Murray, Aykroyd and Hudson) as well as stale story beats and plot points for a disappointing new chapter.

Where and how to Watch Ghostbusters Afterlife?

Right now, the only place to watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife is in a movie theater when it opens on Friday, November 19. You can find a showing at a movie theater near you here. After the movie’s theatrical run, you will be able to purchase Ghostbusters: Afterlife on digital platforms like Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu.

When Will Ghostbusters Afterlife Be Streaming?

The short answer is: We don’t know. A digital release date for Ghostbusters: Afterlife has not yet been announced. Unlike other movie studios during the pandemic, Sony has not had a consistent digital release strategy during the pandemic. Sony’s last big movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is still not available on digital after being in theaters for over 50 days, so if Ghostbusters follows a similar strategy, it won’t come to digital until after the new year.

Will Ghostbusters Afterlife Be on HBO Max?

No. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a Sony movie, not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore Ghostbusters: Afterlife will not be on HBO Max at the same time it is in theaters.  HBO Max which is owned by Warner Media has been the streaming home for blockbuster Warner Bros. theatrical movies like Dune, but it will not be the streaming home for Ghostbusters. (At least, not any time soon.)

The Suicide Squad is currently exclusive to HBO, along with a number of other Warner Bros. pictures including Space Jam: Legacy and The Matrix 4.

Is Ghostbusters Afterlife on Netflix?

No. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is not on Netflix. While Netflix has signed some deals to stream some 2022 Sony films, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a 2021 movie and will likely not be included in that. Therefore, it’s unlikely that Ghostbusters will be streaming on Netflix any time soon.

For a while now, the lowest point of the “Ghostbusters” franchise has been fairly clear. The first 1984 film is an all-time classic, the female-fronted 2016 reboot is pretty good, but 1989’s “Ghostbusters II” is just a failure that even Bill Murray disowned.

The new “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (★★ out of four; rated PG-13; in theaters Friday) comes dangerously close to reaching that bottom. While teenage star Mckenna Grace infuses the aging property with a needed burst of youthful energy, co-writer/director Jason Reitman (son of original filmmaker Ivan Reitman) is more interested in looking backward with the sequel, leaning way too hard on old characters, story beats, plot points and zingers.

To wit: There’s a kid named Podcast who has a podcast, and the little dude’s not even close to being the most unimaginative aspect of this frustrating retread.

When exasperated and broke single mom Callie (Carrie Coon) gets evicted, she moves her teen son Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and 12-year-old daughter Phoebe (Grace) to fictional small-town Summerville, Oklahoma. The father Callie never knew (he abandoned the family) just died and left her a decrepit farmhouse next to an old mine.

While Callie yearns for her next glass of wine and Trevor crushes on a local waitress (Celeste O’Connor), awkward, science-loving Phoebe goes to summer school, where she meets fellow student Podcast (scene-stealing Logan Kim) and finds a kindred spirit in Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd), her teacher who’s been tracking the weird earthquakes that have hit the town recently. One might even say there’s something strange in the neighborhood.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be released to the masses very soon, and considering you probably rewatched at least the original Ghostbusters and maybe even Ghostbusters II as prep, now you need something to watch afterward. No, we don’t have access to a time machine where we get another movie that continues the story from Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but we do have a crapload of Blu-rays and an ever-growing amount of streaming services where you can find plenty of movies that have that Ghostbusters feel.

What, exactly, is a Ghostbusters feel though? Well, even Afterlife co-writer and director Jason Reitman admits that’s difficult to define. But for us, it’s the alchemy of it all. A movie that’s funny, with great visual effects, action, a few scares, but not just those things. Ghostbusters itself is a comedy for sure, but also a sci-fi movie, and kind of a horror movie. There’s even some romance in there. So we’ve rounded up a list of films that blend genres in similar ways which we think you’ll enjoy. Check it out.
